Cradle Mountain is one of the most spectacular wilderness regions I have ever seen. A couple of hours drive out of Launceston, Cradle Mountain looms above Dove Lake, and is threaded with walks and trails.
Most extended tours visit Cradle Mountain, and offer a couple of choices of walks while you are there. Usually either Dove Lake which is quite a flat, easy walk, or up to Marions Lookout, which takes a while longer, and is harder, but is worth the effort.
Several specialised tour companies can walk you through this unique wilderness, and even provide all your food, gear and a guide! The best company for this is Tasmanian Expeditions. This might seem an expensive option, but they provide all gear, food, backup, transfers, park fees and experienced guides. For most people it may be the only way to fully experience the rugged beauty of the Tasmanian wilderness.
The visitors centre at Cradle Mountain is quite good with lots of photos and historical records, and a 3D map on display. You can buy outdoor gear at the Visitors Centre, but make sure you compare prices!
